Seven do-it-yourself energy saving tips to lower your heating bill.

Posted by on

The cold weather has arrived, but that doesn’t mean you should expect high heating bills. Take a tour of your home and fix these common trouble areas to start seeing a smaller heating bill.

  1. Replace old weather stripping around windows and doors. Drafts are the enemy of efficiency. Make sure those gaps are sealed tight.
  2. Eliminate drafts through electrical boxes. You can buy a foam box sealer from your local hardware store and they are a snap to install.
  3. Use expanding spray foam to seal large gaps around pipes through exterior walls. Spray foam is cheap and easy to use and a great way to tighten up areas around pipes that run through the wall.
  4. Buy a portable heater and turn down the furnace. If you find that you spend most of your time on the living room at night, close the door, turn down the furnace and turn on a efficient space heater. There are so many new safe, efficient models that will make your space feel cozy in no time.
  5. Cover windows and doors with plastic. You can buy clear plastic from almost any hardware or department store. It installs quickly and you can use a hairdryer to smooth the plastic out to have a crystal-clear view.
  6. Use the sun to your advantage. Open the shades during the brightest part of the day and let the sunshine warm your space. Close the shades when the sun goes down to hold on to that heat and to stop drafts.
  7. Keep warm air from escaping up the chimney. Pick up a cheap and easy to install chimney balloon from your local hardware store to prevent the loss of that precious heat!
